At the time of writing this I have finally found an idea worthy of fleshing out for my second piece. Since completing my first piece sometime last week, I have been grinding out idea after idea for what I can do next, but nothing seemed to grab me. My first piece was heavily inspired by Webern's Piano Variations op.27 (specifically the first movement), so I initially was trying to write another piece that was "Webernish" as a nice counterpoint to my first. But as stated above, after several failed attempts I decided to take a different route and try something completely different. This worked out much better, and indeed it is contrasting, it's nothing at all like my first piece. I wanted my first piece to be slow, full of rubato and the emphasis put on each dinstinct interval. This one is very rhythmic, full of energy and has a somewhat Bartok feel to it. I had some concerns at first that perhaps it would be too disimilar to my first piece and therefore they wouldn't flow to make a logical whole. But after listening to them back to back I think they compliment each other in a peculiar way. I have decided that this will be my middle piece, and my third and final piece will return to a more abstract and Webern inspired sound. I am also planning to use bowed vibes on my last piece, but beyound that, I am not quite sure how it is going to turn out as of yet.
